Ep. 7: Cross-Cultural Communication and Workplace Support

About The Blueprint
Welcome to The Blueprint Podcast, where we share high-impact insights from our conversations with Visionaries, Entrepreneurs, Community Builders, and Team Leaders. Each episode distills principles from their personal blueprints—giving you practical ideas grounded in Play, Deep Conversation, and Self-awareness to help you elevate your leadership journey and craft.
The Core Concept
Leadership influence and workplace communication extend far beyond technical job performance. True impact is rooted in building psychological safety, cultural empathy, and genuine human connection.
Leaders who lead with open vulnerability first remove ‘transactional’ barriers, creating environments where international professionals, students, and local teams move past isolation and feel a deep sense of belonging. By addressing the root "whys" of communication gaps rather than relying on surface-level assumptions, visionaries can build inclusive systems that bridge cultural divides and empower diverse teams to thrive.
How We Define Leadership
Inspired by business magazines such as Harvard Business Review, McKinsey and Center for Creative Leadership, we define leadership as a behavioral process that bridges a compelling future state with concrete operational execution. Leadership is the behavioral bridge that makes the collective future vision a reality.
Key Leadership Points
Vulnerability as a Leadership Icebreaker: Leading with candid, personal stories first lowers room guards, builds immediate common ground, and establishes psychological safety across diverse teams.
Digging into the Root "Why": Effective leadership requires looking past surface-level miscommunications or feedback gaps, such as the American "compliment sandwich", to address the below-the-surface cultural disconnects.
Curiosity Over Assumptions: Approaching workplace interactions with open curiosity rather than firm cultural expectations prevents burnout and eliminates isolation.

Guest Origin Story
Originally from the Midwest, Autumn Garrett dedicated over 16 years to teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to international adults and professionals. After moving to South Korea to teach, she experienced firsthand the profound isolation, cold nights, and cultural disorientation of being far from home.
Returning to the US, her international students repeatedly asked her how to make real local friends and navigate transactional networking. Realizing that language classes taught grammar but missed relational integration, Autumn turned those recurring insights into a business, founding Belong Here Co. to help internationals transition from feeling like outsiders to locals in San Diego.
Guest Current 'Craft' Progress
Autumn actively builds Belong Here Co. as a hyper-local ecosystem offering small, curated "Global Locals" mixers, like burger tastings and local outings, workplace communication coaching, cultural onboarding, and group masterminds. She guides international professionals, engineering/science visa holders, international students, and entrepreneurs through American workplace dynamics, such as deciphering indirect manager feedback and mastering small talk.
Guest 'Craft' Future
Autumn's vision is to scale Belong Here Co. into a self-sustaining ecosystem of mutual support, expanding her group coaching, corporate partnerships, and community mixers so that every international professional stepping foot in San Diego feels immediate ownership, safety, and a sense of belonging in the city.
The 3 Principles of Successful 'Craft' Pursuit
Play: Embracing whimsical personal touches, like choosing vibrant pink headphones, a pink mouse, and a pink keyboard over standard black, and enjoying lighthearted conversations about cartoony aliens with her son.
Deep Conversation: Exploring the emotional strain of expat isolation, navigating direct vs. indirect cultural feedback loops, and unpacking how transactional networking alienates individuals seeking true connection.
Self-Awareness: Recognizing her own impatience and setting healthy relationship boundaries, identifying her strengths as an extrovert connector, and practicing daily morning brain-dumps ("Morning Pages" from _The Artist's Way_) to channel creativity.

Practical Exercise
The "First to Open Up" Leadership Challenge
Identify the Setting: Choose an upcoming meeting, networking event, or team huddle where you expect formal tension or guarded communication.
Lower Your Guard First: Rather than waiting for others to break the ice or asking standard ‘transactional’ questions (e.g., _"How are you?_"), lead the interaction by sharing a short, candid slice of real life... a funny morning moment, a minor glitch, or a personal hobby.
Observe the Room: Notice how offering vulnerable, candid context instantly lowers the room's guards, gets a smile, and invites others to share authentic stories.
Dig 2 Layers Deeper: Follow up by asking an open-ended question about what the other person is actively working on or excited about. Listen 80% of the time.
