Ep. 1: The Art of Belonging: Authenticity in Modern Leadership with Devi The Evolutionary

By Alissa Johnston

About The Blueprint

Welcome to The Blueprint Podcast, where we share high-impact insights from our conversations with Visionaries, Entrepreneurs, Community Builders, and Team Leaders. Each episode distills principles from their personal blueprints—giving you practical ideas grounded in Play, Deep Conversation, and Self-awareness to help you elevate your leadership journey and craft.

The Core Concept

Leadership is not defined by titles, years of experience, or traditional honors. True leadership influence stems from the willingness to show up authentically, own your presence in any room, and build spaces where others feel safe enough to transform, collaborate, and step into their own power.

When leaders shift from transactional networking to genuine relationship-building, they unlock collective potential that surpasses what anyone can achieve alone.

How We Define Leadership

Inspired by business magazines such as Harvard Business Review, McKinsey and Center for Creative Leadership, we define leadership as a behavioral process that bridges a compelling future state with concrete operational execution. Leadership is the behavioral bridge that makes the collective future vision a reality.

Key Leadership Points

  • Belonging Precedes Contribution: Showing up with the deep internal belief that you belong in the room—simply because you are there—instantly changes how you communicate, lead, and influence others.

  • Transformation Over Transaction: Sustainable leadership is about bringing people together not just to gather, but to facilitate transformational growth. It should help others navigate painful change and emerge stronger.

  • The Power of Co-Regulation: Leading effectively requires balancing healthy drive with self-awareness and mind-body alignment. Relying on trusted peers for co-regulation and support is an essential practice to avoid burnout and maintain strategic clarity.

  • Curiosity Over Credentials: Dismissing wisdom based on age, background, or traditional credentials causes leaders to miss out on vital insights. Real wisdom comes from living through life's extremes and reflecting on those experiences with intention.

Community Leader / Visionary

Show up in every room, knowing that you belong in the room just simply because you're there. The opportunities don't find you for no reason... as long as you walk it and you talk it, nothing else matters.

Guest Origin Story

Devi's core drive and courage formed early in life. At just six years old, she demonstrated fierce bravery by hopping on her bicycle late at night to follow a suspicious figure to make sure her working mother was safe.

After navigating intense personal trauma, loss, and periods of homelessness alongside her husband and child, Devi reached a point of stability after her husband joined the military. Transitioning into a stay-at-home mom, she realized she was still stuck in a survival mindset.

While attempting to launch a clothing brand, she paused to ask hard questions about her true gifts and passion—discovering that her real calling wasn't selling products, but creating the deep, supportive, family-like community she always wished she had growing up.

Guest Current 'Craft' Progress

Devi is a young leader actively building Vision and Voice, a community platform designed to offer support, guidance, and safe spaces for women and emerging builders to express their visions without fear of failure.

She hosts local community gatherings aimed at bringing people together to share goals, exchange support, and navigate transformational growth collectively.

Guest 'Craft' Future

Devi is currently laying the groundwork to formalize Vision and Voice into an official nonprofit organization. Her long-term vision is to continuously expand these transformative spaces, helping leaders diversify their networks, embrace their authenticity, and access continuous peer support across California and beyond.

The 3 Principles of Successful 'Craft' Pursuit

  • Play: Embrace joy, laughter, and lighthearted connection as essential creative work. Devi practices play through dancing, celebrating small moments, and stepping away from "work mode" to recharge in creative environments.

  • Deep Conversation: Move past surface-level small talk to explore meaningful, even vulnerable realities. Rather than transactional networking, Devi views connection as a courting process centered on collaborative building and authentic sharing.

  • Self-Awareness: Balance drive and ego with introspection. Devi maintains self-awareness through grounding routines, body-mind awareness, meditation, and spiritual practices that keep her aligned with her core values.

Tools and Resources Highlighted

  • Somatic & Grounding Practices: Mind-body integration practices—such as intentional breathing, meditation, going outside to put your feet in the dirt, spiritual baths, and co-regulating with trusted friends.

Practical Exercise

"Own Your Space" Personal-Audit and Grounding Practice

  1. Identify the Room: Think of a meeting, event, or professional setting coming up this week where you've felt slight imposter syndrome or hesitated to speak up.

  2. Reframe Belonging: Before entering, pause and take three deep, intentional breaths. Remind yourself: "I belong in this room because I am here, and my perspective has value."

  3. Body & Mind Check-In: Scan your body for tension, such as a tight stomach or shallow breathing. Intentionally release your stomach muscles, drop your shoulders, and take a full breath to connect your mind and body.

  4. Courting Connection: In that meeting, instead of seeking a quick transaction, ask one person an open-ended question about what they are actively building or passionate about now. Share one thing from your side to help them get comfortable and open up. What you learn may surprise you!
